One More Time With CameraAddict.com
Eighteen months ago, I bought a Sony Bravia VW-VPL60 projector from an online vendor CameraAddict.com. There was no end to the scary stuff coming from this company despite the fact that all the equipment we received was in good working order. Turns out that everything was on the up and up except for the Repair Warranty that they sold us. This morning, I tried to call them to inquire about getting a replacement bulb and the web site is no longer online and all the telephone numbers are no longer in service. It appears that the company went out of business and won't honor their outstanding warranties. Many are calling it a scam though I'm not sure the company isn't just a casualty of the current economic crisis. In either case, the $350 warranty I purchased is worthless and I thought I would pass this along to those that have ever followed my home theater posts. Can't say I'm surprised by this given the trouble we had with the equipment vendor. Looks like our only recourse is to file a BBB complaint of some sort and wait in line behind the rest of the customers with orphaned warranties.

There is a scam that many roofing companies did in the 90s where they would offer a "lifetime" guarantee, close the business in the winter, then reopen under a new name and management, effectively voiding all of their guarantees with old customers. Luckily the laws eventually got changed to fix that loophole, but many roofing companies are still notoriously shady.
