110" DIY Screen Revisited...
I've had my DIY built screen for a full year now and it still looks good as new. A comment on my construction page got me thinking about what I would do differently next time and I could only come up with two things.
1) I'd put cleats in the four corners of the screen instead of the top. Hanging the screen at all four corners would stop some of the twisting I am seeing with the frame today. Mind you, it's minor but having all four corners fastened to the wall would likely prevent the slight warping of the frame that I've seen over the past year.
2) I'd use some other material as the backing for the edging. Something with a harder edge that was guaranteed to be straighter. While I do not notice the couple of bumps in the edge line of the black velvet, I know it is there. No one else ever notices it so it's one of those things. That and most movies I watch are 2.35:1 ratio so the vast majority of the screen's edges are not used during movie watching.
All in all, I've been satisfied with the screen in almost every way. Props go out to AVSForums.com for their great DIY Screen forum because that's where I developed most of the idea for the screen and it's worked out great.
